Vardenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men. Vardenafil is in a class of medications called phosphodiesterase inhibitors. As vardenafil enhances the actions of the chemical messengers responsible for producing an erection, it will only work once these messengers are present. This means that sexual stimulation is required for it to produce and maintain an erection.

Penile erection is a hemodynamic process initiated by the relaxation of smooth muscle in the corpus cavernosum and its associated arterioles. During sexual stimulation, nitric oxide is released from nerve endings and endothelial cells in the corpus cavernosum. Nitric oxide activates the enzyme guanylate cyclase resulting in increased synthesis of cyclic guanosine monophosphate in the smooth muscle cells of the corpus cavernosum. The cGMP in turn triggers smooth muscle relaxation, allowing increased blood flow into the penis, resulting in erection.

In the past few years, a new class of drug has been developed to help men with ED (erectile dysfunction). ED (erectile dysfunction) used to be blamed on psychological factors. However, with drugs like Levitra, we now know that erectile dysfunction is largely a physical problem. Problems like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and and simple old age can cause difficulties in getting and maintaining an erection. Levitra doesn't cure ED. You take Levitra right before you want to have sex. Within about an hour you are better able to get an erection, and the effect wears off a few hours after that.

Erectile dysfunction can be a total inability to achieve erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or a tendency to sustain only brief erections. These variations make defining ED and estimating its incidence difficult. Estimates range from 15 million to 30 million, depending on the definition used.
